Abuja (EPICSTORIAN ) – Amnesty International has condemned the brutal executions carried out by Boko Haram in northeastern Nigeria, where over 40 civilians were massacred in Borno State’s farming communities on January 12.
The attack, which targeted farmers and fishermen, sheds light on the group’s persistent atrocities and blatant disregard for human life and international law.
Isa Sanusi, Director of Amnesty International Nigeria, denounced the killings, stating, “Amnesty International strongly condemns the executions of these civilians, which once again show Boko Haram’s utter disregard for the sanctity of human life and international humanitarian law. Boko Haram must be held accountable for its years of atrocities, including war crimes.”
Targeted Killings and Destruction
According to the organization’s report, an eyewitness accounts revealed that Boko Haram militants stormed the Dumba community near Baga, forcibly separating men from the rest of the villagers before executing them at close range.
Some victims attempted to escape but were ruthlessly hunted down and killed. The attack left dozens injured, while many remain missing. Authorities and community members are still recovering bodies, with plans underway for a mass burial.
In addition to the killings, Boko Haram continues to abduct women and girls and engage in large-scale looting, leaving a trail of devastation in its wake. This latest attack highlights the ongoing security crisis in northeastern Nigeria, where civilians remain at risk despite government efforts to combat insurgency.
A Pattern of Terror in Northeast Nigeria
The massacre is part of a broader pattern of violence that has gripped the region for over a decade. Since 2020, Boko Haram has frequently targeted farmers and fishermen in Lake Chad’s surrounding communities, accusing them of collaborating with government forces.
The UN estimates that the insurgency, which began in 2011, has displaced over two million people, creating a severe humanitarian crisis.
Amnesty International Faults Nigerian Army For Human rights Violations
The international justice campaigner has extensively documented war crimes committed by Boko Haram and alleged human rights violations by the Nigerian military in its counterinsurgency efforts.
The organization is now urging authorities to step up civilian protection and ensure justice for the victims of these heinous crimes.
Call for accountability grows louder, as communities mourn yet another mass killings in Borno State. Amnesty International insists that without urgent action, Boko Haram’s reign of terror will continue, leaving more innocent lives in jeopardy
