Anambra, Nigeria (EPICSTORIAN) — Authorities in Anambra State have shut down a shrine in Okija, Ihiala Local Government Area, allegedly connected to ‘Oke Ite’ money rituals and cyber fraud-related practices, known as ‘Yahoo Plus.’
The government’s decision aims to curb ritual killings and illegal activities tied to traditional occult practices.
‘Oke Ite’ rituals, widely condemned for their association with human sacrifices and extreme spiritual practices, have become a growing concern in southeastern Nigeria.

Dr. Ramaz Okoye-Asuzu, a traditional medicine expert, warned that these rituals have infiltrated many communities, fueling criminal activities. “The rise of these practices is alarming. It’s no longer a hidden operation—it’s spreading rapidly,” he said.
The state government recently enforced the Homeland Security Law to target such activities. However, criticism has emerged from traditionalists who claim the law unfairly targets indigenous religious practices.
The African Traditional Practitioners of Nigeria have accused authorities of labeling their spiritual customs as criminal.
Dibia Chukwuma Ezeruonye, the group’s Supreme Leader, defended the role of traditional worship, stating, “We are not criminals. Our practices are part of our heritage and contribute to the state’s cultural and economic growth.” (punchng.com)
This recent crackdown recalls the infamous 2004 police raid on the Okija Shrine, where over 70 human remains were discovered, leading to multiple arrests.
