(EPICSTORIAN) – The Bishop of Liverpool, Right Reverend Dr. John Perumbalath, has publicly refuted allegations of sexual assault following an investigation by the Church of England.
The claims, which surfaced in a Channel 4 News report, involve two women—one alleging multiple incidents of assault between 2019 and 2023, and another accusing him of harassment.
The allegations trace back to Dr. Perumbalath’s tenure as Bishop of Bradwell in the Diocese of Chelmsford, Essex. A Church of England spokesperson confirmed that an investigation was conducted and concluded that while no ongoing safeguarding concerns were found, a “learning outcome” was identified and addressed.
Bishop of Liverpool Perumbalath Responds
In a strongly worded statement, Dr. Perumbalath denied all allegations, stating that the interactions in question took place in public settings with witnesses present.
“I have consistently denied the allegations made against me by both complainants,” he said. “I have fully complied with all investigations, including those conducted by the Church and law enforcement. The police examined the claims and determined no further action was required.”
Despite asserting his innocence, the bishop acknowledged the broader impact of the controversy. “While I do not believe I have done anything wrong, I have reflected on how my actions may be perceived by others. I remain committed to safeguarding and leadership in this area,” he added.
Church and Police Investigations Close Case
The National Safeguarding Team of the Church of England investigated the first complaint in early 2023, concluding that while no disciplinary action was warranted, the bishop engaged in a process of “learning.” When a second woman later came forward, church officials assessed the case as a matter of misconduct rather than safeguarding.
The Essex Police, who voluntarily interviewed the bishop under caution in March 2023, closed their investigation without any charges. The Church of England reiterated that “pastoral support has been provided to the complainants throughout the process.”
Background and Ongoing Leadership
Born in Kerala, India, Dr. Perumbalath was ordained in the Church of North India in 1994 before relocating to the UK in 2001. He served in the Diocese of Rochester before assuming his role in Liverpool in 2023.
