Tragic Stampede at Ibadan Carnival Sparks Calls for Safer Event Planning Nationwide
The Oyo State Government has expressed deep sorrow following a tragic event that claimed several lives during a stampede at a private children’s carnival held at Basorun Islamic High School in Ibadan, Oyo State, on December 18, 2024.
The State Government under governor Seyi Makinde has after it confirmed the incident, through the office of the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, addressed the public, offering support to affected families.
Prince Dotun Oyelade, the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, stated, “The stampede resulted in a tragic loss of lives and injuries, predominantly affecting children. Victims were swiftly transported to hospitals across Ibadan for medical attention.”
The commissioner also clarified that the event was privately organized, with no involvement or logistical support from the state government.
Parents Check Injured Victims of Children’s Carnival incident
The government has identified hospitals treating the injured, including the University College Hospital and Ring Road State Hospital, urging parents to check these facilities for their children. In addition, a detailed report from the Commissioner of Police is awaited to confirm the exact number of casualties.
Prince Oyelade emphasized the importance of stringent coordination and safety measures for events involving children. “This tragedy underscores the critical need for proper planning and adherence to safety protocols for public gatherings,” he added.
Oyo State’s swift response included deploying emergency teams and mobilizing healthcare personnel under the leadership of Dr. Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, the Commissioner for Health. The government reassured victims and their families of its unwavering support during this difficult time.
Recurrence of Public Gathering Accidents
This incident mirrors a similar tragedy earlier in Abuja, where a stampede at a food distribution event claimed 10 lives. Such accidents underline Nigeria’s ongoing challenges in event safety, particularly in crowded gatherings.
Experts emphasize the necessity for stringent regulations, public awareness, and collaboration between organizers and law enforcement to prevent future mishaps.

Nigeria faces increased road safety issues, with frequent accidents attributed to reckless driving, poor road conditions, and inadequate enforcement of traffic laws.
