(EPICSTORIAN) — Elon Musk has issued a strong warning about what he describes as the “woke mind virus,” arguing that its influence extends beyond cultural debates and is now shaping artificial intelligence in ways that could endanger humanity.
Speaking at the Atreju conference in Italy, he described this ideology as a divisive force that distorts social values and compromises AI neutrality.
“The more I learn, the more insidious and deadly it appears,” Musk said, raising concerns about the extent to which ideological biases are embedded in digital systems.
AI Adopting Woke Mind Virus
AI models, trained on vast amounts of internet data, are absorbing these influences, making objective reasoning increasingly difficult.
Most AI systems, according to Musk, have been programmed with woke ideology, with the exception of his own Grok AI. Even Grok, he acknowledged, faces challenges in avoiding ideological bias due to the overwhelming volume of woke content online.
“Maybe the biggest existential danger to humanity is having it programmed into AI,” he warned, emphasizing the potential consequences of allowing ideological narratives to dictate artificial intelligence outputs.
Providing an example, Musk cited AI models that were asked to compare the threats posed by global thermonuclear war and misgendering.
“They picked the latter,” he said, describing this response as evidence of a warped prioritization of social concerns over existential risks.
A superintelligent AI, programmed with such logic, could reach dangerous conclusions.
“The only 100% certain way to stop misgendering is to kill all humans,” he added, highlighting the unintended consequences of ideological programming.
Beyond AI, Musk described the woke mind virus as a broader societal issue that fosters division. “It actually amplifies racism, it amplifies sexism, and all the -isms, while claiming to do the opposite,” he said.
The ideology, he argued, places identity above merit, undermining principles of fairness.
“You want to have people succeed based on how hard they work and their talents,” he said, rejecting the notion that factors like race or gender should determine opportunities.
A concept Musk described as an “artificial mental civil war” has emerged, intensifying conflicts rather than fostering unity. “It makes people hate each other, and it makes people hate themselves,” he said.
This movement, he argued, does not uplift individuals but instead focuses on condemnation. “The woke mind virus is all about condemning people instead of celebrating people,” he said.
Musk’s comments reflect ongoing debates about the role of ideological influence in artificial intelligence and society.
The rapid expansion of AI into decision-making processes raises concerns about whether these systems will remain neutral or be shaped by cultural and political biases.

The challenge, he suggested, lies in ensuring AI serves as an objective tool rather than one that reinforces ideological divides.
