Guinea lifts internet access ban for citizens—four days after the dissolution of Bernard Goumou's government by the military Junta Mamadi Doumbouya

The Guinean transitional authority has, after three months of imposition of Internet access ban, removed restrictions for citizens. Guinea

The restraining order was lifted on Thursday night to Friday, February 2023, following the military takeover of president Bernard Goumou’s government.

According to a report, the restrictions were placed due to a “problem of security”. However, there are other things pertaining to the outgoing government and its agencies’ involvement in “corruption”.

The restrictions on access to the internet in Guinea had been caused by a rising climate of social tension after the announcement of the dissolution of the government of Bernard Goumou by the military Junta on Monday

Having stayed barely two and a half years in power, Bernard Goumou was appointed prime minister by military general Mamadi Doumbouya in September 2021 after overthrowing the government of elected President Alpha Condé over bidding for a third term office.

Since the military coup by the now transitional President Mamady Doumbou, activities of the dissolved ministers were being monitored, which also has led to their bank accounts being frozen and their official cars and passports seized by the Military Junta.

With other restrictions, including the removal of television channels and the interference of radio frequencies—citizens say the transitional government and its agencies had also angered protesters, especially journalists.

A sentence of six months imprisonment was requested Tuesday by the Guinean justice against the head of a union or of the press, held to have called for a protest against the censorship of certain media and the internet – any event is prohibited from 2022. The verdict was to be known this Friday, according to Jeune Afrique.

Also, in the presence of uncertainty in the country as they wait for the Friday verdict, citizens of Guinea are criticising the system and expressing dissatisfaction with the transitional government.

“The greatest enemies in this country are our leaders, especially the transition team. They are now looking to redeem himself by making people believe that only some members of the team [government] returned are responsible for the restriction of the internet for the last three months, ” one of the protesters said.

Another protester informed that the lifting of impositions was one of the demands of the trade unions announcing a general and unlimited strike from Monday.

“This is further proof that our leaders do not understand the ratio of force,” he said.
