Anambra State Police has opened an investigation into a search for some unidentified shooters, who were reported to have attacked and killed two policemen in the state on Thursday evening.Gunmen With AK-47 Kill Two Officers In Anambra
Sources on ground said, the gunmen who killed the two police officers may have come from one of the Southeastern neighbouring states.
The incident was said to have occurred in Aguata Local Government Area, near Agu Roundabout.
Shooting constantly with the intention to overpower the police, one man among a group of onlookers at the crime scene, Ikenga said the attack “was a rain of bullets” as they were “kidnapping people at random” and at the same battling for a safe way of escape.
The man narrated,“It was a rain of bullets at Uga Roundabout, Aguata LGA on Thursday, December 28 as some hoodlums came in their numbers from the Umuchu-Umunze Road, all carrying AK-47, kidnapping people at random.
He also claimed that the shooters were dressed in military camouflage, and had appeared to have come to the area to kidnap when they saw the police vehicle carrying armed officers and opened fire at them. Gunmen With AK-47 Kill Two Officers In Anambra
“They were not in a hurry to go as they remained for long unchallenged. When they sighted a group of policemen coming up from the Ezinifite axis, they opened fire and gunned down two of them.
“Anambra State Police Command has launched an intensive manhunt for armed insurgents who infiltrated from a neighbouring state and killed two police personnel on December 28, 2023, at about 6.30 pm,” the man added.
“They opened fire on the officers who had moved ahead of the convoy they were escorting to decongest traffic gridlock. Other personnel returned fire, careful not to hit many motorists who were in traffic, forcing the bandits to flee.” Gunmen With AK-47 Kill Two Officers In Anambra
He revealed that the police patrol team, responsible for safeguarding the area during the Christmas, arrived at the scene of the shootings soon after the assailants had escaped. (6)
Ikenga also said that the officers were able to seize the gunmen’s Lexus SUV and some devices found in the car, which were suspected to be explosives.
