The U.S. Embassy in Ukraine issued a security alert on Sunday, December 8, warning American citizens of heightened risks from Russian missile and drone attacks, a Ukraine-based media said.
The embassy urged U.S. nationals in Ukraine to exercise extreme caution, highlighting ongoing threats to the country’s critical civilian infrastructure.
“Due to increased threats from Russian missiles and drones targeting Ukraine’s critical civilian infrastructure, the U.S. Embassy in Kyiv urges U.S. citizens to exercise heightened caution,” the statement read, as cited by Ukrinform.
U.S. Embassy Advises Nationals in Ukraine to Monitor Alerts from Ukrainian Authorities
It advised American citizens to closely monitor alerts from Ukrainian authorities regarding possible airstrikes. It urged them to install reliable air raid alert applications on their mobile devices and act promptly during emergencies.
“U.S. citizens should abide by all government curfews and quickly follow instructions and seek shelter during air alerts,” the embassy added.
This alert comes just weeks after the U.S. Embassy, on November 20, reported receiving “specific information” about a significant airstrike threat. Following that warning, embassies of Spain, Italy, and Greece temporarily suspended visitor services, citing similar concerns over a potential large-scale attack.
However, Ukraine’s Center for Countering Disinformation later suggested that such warnings may have been part of a disinformation campaign orchestrated by Russian actors to spread panic among foreign diplomatic missions in Kyiv.
Meanwhile, Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs urged international partners to respond to Russian threats carefully without amplifying unnecessary fear.
The Ongoing Military Operations between Ukraine and Russia
The war continues to intensify as Russia focuses on crippling Ukraine’s infrastructure with missile and drone barrages. Ukrainian air defense systems, bolstered by Western technology, are being tested daily, particularly as colder weather exacerbates the energy crisis caused by attacks on power grids.
Russia, while dealing with personnel losses and supply chain issues, remains relentless in its attempts to undermine Ukrainian resilience. The U.S., as Ukraine’s largest ally, provides critical military support, including missile defense systems, intelligence sharing, and humanitarian aid.
