(EPICSTORIAN) — Katy Perry is set to embark on a groundbreaking journey to space as part of Blue Origin’s first all-female mission aboard the New Shepard rocket.
The pop icon joins a distinguished crew that includes Lauren Sánchez, CBS presenter Gayle King, former NASA rocket scientist Aisha Bowe, civil rights activist Amanda Nguyen, and film producer Kerianne Flynn.
Blue Origin confirmed the launch is scheduled for this spring but has not provided an exact date.
The NS-31 mission will mark the 11th human spaceflight for New Shepard and the 31st launch in its history. So far, 52 people have traveled to space through the program.
Reflecting on the historic mission, Perry expressed her excitement: “If you had told me I’d be part of the first all-female crew in space, I would have believed you. Nothing was beyond my imagination as a child.”
Lauren Sánchez, who played a key role in assembling the mission, emphasized its impact, stating that she is “honored to lead a team of explorers on a mission that will challenge their perspectives of Earth, empower them to share their own stories, and create a lasting impact that will inspire generations to come.”
Blue Origin’s New Shepard offers an 11-minute autonomous flight, taking passengers past the Kármán line, the internationally recognized boundary of space.
This mission adds to a growing list of high-profile spaceflights involving celebrities. Jeff Bezos himself participated in Blue Origin’s first crewed mission in 2021, followed by TV personality Michael Strahan and actor William Shatner.
Virgin Galactic’s Richard Branson completed his own journey in 2021, while SpaceX’s Elon Musk has yet to make a trip.
Perry’s spaceflight is expected to take place before her “Lifetimes Tour”, which runs from April to November.
