(EPICSTORIAN) — French President Emmanuel Macron has reiterated his stance that a lasting peace in Ukraine is only possible if Russia halts its military aggression.
Following discussions with European leaders, U.S. President Donald Trump, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Macron emphasized the need for strong security guarantees to prevent further instability in the region.
Call for an End to Russian Aggression and Restoration of Peace in Ukraine
Macron made it clear that any resolution to the conflict hinges on Russia ceasing its military actions. Speaking after high-level diplomatic talks, he underscored the importance of ensuring Ukraine’s security beyond temporary ceasefires.
“Russia must end its aggression for a strong and lasting peace in Ukraine,” Macron stated. “This must be accompanied by strong and credible security guarantees for the Ukrainians.”
Previous agreements, such as the Minsk accords, failed to prevent renewed hostilities. Macron warned that without binding security commitments, any truce risks breaking down, leading to prolonged instability in Eastern Europe.
European Security and Strategic Independence
A broader push for European defense cooperation accompanied Macron’s calls for peace. He stressed the urgency of strengthening Europe’s ability to protect itself and support allies facing external threats.
“Europeans must invest better, more, and together in their security and defense—both for today and for the future,” he said.
His remarks align with ongoing European efforts to reduce dependence on external security guarantees and reinforce military capabilities. Investment in defense industries, increased coordination among European nations, and strategic autonomy remain key priorities.
Accelerating the European Defense Agenda
Macron pointed to the 2022 Versailles Summit as a blueprint for strengthening Europe’s security framework. He urged swift action in implementing policies aimed at enhancing military readiness and economic resilience.
“This agenda must simply be carried out. Decisions, actions, coherence. Quickly,” he emphasized.
The push for a stronger European security architecture coincides with continued financial and military aid to Ukraine. Macron highlighted the importance of maintaining international pressure on Russia while equipping Ukraine with the necessary resources to defend its sovereignty.
Ongoing Diplomatic Engagement
Further discussions with world leaders are expected in the coming days. Macron remains focused on rallying European and Western allies behind a unified strategy that balances military support for Ukraine with long-term security planning.
Efforts to ensure peace while deterring future aggression reflect a larger shift in Europe’s strategic priorities.
