Here are some recent military coups  in Africa. The countries where military coups have taken place in Africa are: Mali, Sudan, Niger, Burkina Faso, Zimbabwe and Egypt. Military coups in Africa

1. Mali (2020): On August 18, 2020, the Malian military staged a coup and overthrew President Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta. The coup was led by Colonel Assimi Goïta, who later became the interim president.

2. Sudan (2019): In April 2019, the Sudanese military ousted President Omar al-Bashir after months of protests against his regime. The military established a transitional military council, which later handed over power to a civilian-led government in 2020.

3. Zimbabwe (2017): In November 2017, the Zimbabwean military placed President Robert Mugabe under house arrest, leading to his resignation. The military intervention was seen as a coup, although the military denied it and referred to it as a “military intervention.”

4. Burkina Faso (2015): In September 2015, the Burkinabe military staged a coup and overthrew President Blaise Compaoré, who had been in power for 27 years. The coup was led by General Gilbert Diendéré, but it was short-lived, and the transitional government was restored within a week.

5. Egypt (2013): Although Egypt is not geographically in Africa, it is often considered part of the African continent. In July 2013, the Egyptian military, led by General Abdel Fattah el-Sisi.

6. Niger Republic:

The Niger military coup refers to the overthrow of the government of Niger by the country’s military forces. On February 18, 2010, the Nigerien President Mamadou Tandja was ousted in a coup led by Colonel Salou Djibo.  Military coups in Africa

President Tandja had been in power for over a decade and had extended his term beyond the constitutional limits, which had caused widespread protests and international condemnation. The military, under the leadership of Colonel Djibo, seized control of the government, dissolved the constitution, and suspended all political activities.

The coup was met with mixed reactions both domestically and internationally. While some Nigeriens celebrated the removal of President Tandja, others expressed concerns about the military’s control over the government. The African Union and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) condemned the coup and imposed sanctions on Niger until a civilian-led transitional government was established. Following the coup, a transitional government was put in place, and elections were held in 2011, leading to the restoration of civilian rule. However, Niger has experienced several military coups throughout its history, highlighting the challenges of democratic governance in the country.

On July, 2023, Niger’s government was overthrown, and President Mohamed Bazoum was taken hostage. Member countries of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) issued  an order, an ultimatum to the coup leaders, threatening to take military actions against them if the supplanted Bazoum was not reinstalled to his civilian government.
