Jerusalem — Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu has appointed Dr. Yehiel Leiter as Israel’s next ambassador to the United States in a key diplomatic move.
With a storied career in public service and deep ties to both Israel and the U.S., Dr. Leiter’s appointment comes at a critical moment in the countries’ relationship.
“I decided to appoint Dr. Yehiel Leiter as Israel’s ambassador to the United States,” Netanyahu stated, highlighting the new ambassador’s extensive experience.
Dr. Leiter has held several senior roles within the Israeli government, including Deputy Director General of the Ministry of Education, Chief of Staff to the Minister of Finance, and Acting Chairman of the Israel Ports Company.
Born in the United States, Dr. Leiter is described as having “a deep familiarity with the American government and society,” which Netanyahu sees as an invaluable asset in strengthening the ties between the two nations.
“Yehiel is a highly talented diplomat, an eloquent speaker, and has a deep understanding of American culture and politics,” Netanyahu added, expressing his confidence in Leiter’s ability to represent Israel effectively.
The appointment, however, is bittersweet for Dr. Leiter, who recently lost his son, Major Moshe Yadida. The young officer was killed in action in Gaza on November 10, 2023.
Netanyahu voiced his belief that Leiter’s appointment will serve Israel well, saying, “I am convinced that Yehiel will represent the State of Israel in the best possible way, and I wish him success in his position.”
Dr. Leiter is expected to assume his new role soon, bringing a blend of expertise and emotional resilience to one of Israel’s most critical diplomatic posts.
