Nigerian President Tinubu and Indian Prime Minister Modi discuss maritime security and Global South partnerships in Abuja.
ABUJA, Nigeria — Nigerian President Bola Tinubu and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi have committed to deepening bilateral ties in maritime security and counterterrorism.
During a meeting in Abuja on Sunday, both leaders also emphasized the need for stronger advocacy for Global South nations.
Marking his inaugural visit to Nigeria, Prime Minister Modi met with President Tinubu to discuss enhancing their strategic partnership across key areas, including defense, energy, technology, trade, and development.
The discussions highlighted a shared commitment to addressing global and regional challenges, especially those faced by both countries and other politically allied nations.
Speaking at the meeting, Modi reiterated India’s dedication to championing the priorities of the Global South, a diverse coalition of developing nations that includes Nigeria, China, and wealthy Persian Gulf states.
“Together, we will continue to highlight at the global level the priorities of the Global South, and thanks to our joint efforts, we will achieve success as well in this,” Modi stated.
A joint communiqué released after the meeting highlighted plans for closer collaboration in combating terrorism, bolstering maritime security, and enhancing intelligence sharing.
The Gulf of Guinea, off West Africa’s coast, and the Indian Ocean are both critical maritime zones frequently threatened by piracy and other security challenges.
India, already Nigeria’s largest trading partner in Africa, recorded bilateral trade worth $14.9 billion in 2022, Associated Press reported. The longstanding relationship is further underscored by the presence of over 60,000 Indian nationals and 200 Indian companies operating in Nigeria.
President Tinubu conferred upon Modi the prestigious Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger, Nigeria’s second-highest national honor. Tinubu praised Modi for exemplifying “a very strong commitment to democratic values and norms.”
Nigeria And India Deepen Friendship for Mutual Benefits
The Nigerian leader also expressed optimism about the growing partnership between the two nations. “Nigeria values its excellent relationship with India and will work to broaden the same for the mutual benefits of our two friendly countries,” he said.
This visit marks a significant milestone in the relationship between the two influential nations, each representing powerful voices in the Global South.
With both countries focusing on shared priorities such as security, development, and global advocacy, this could shape a promising future marked by strengthened cooperation and mutual prosperity.
