The 48 year-old South Korean actor, Lee Sun-Kyun, who is admired for his ground role in Oscar winning firm Parasite has been confirmed dead today in what was described as “apparent” suicide. Parasite actor Lee Sun-Kyun confirmed dead in clear suicide
Lee was identified by Seoul police after a man in his 40’s was seen unconscious in a car park at 10:30 am on 27 December, according to Yonhap news agency.
Also in the passenger seat was reportedly discovered charcoal briquette. 3
Sources said, the actor’s wife had reported to police, earlier on Wednesday, revealing that Lee left home and she had found what appeared to be a suicide note. Parasite actor Lee Sun-Kyun confirmed dead in clear suicide
He had been under investigation over illegal drug use allegations amid an ongoing government crackdown.
Before taking his life, the actor had been questioned three times by police, including for 19 hours over the weekend.
The South Korean government would spare no one found in possession of illegal drugs, as drug laws in South Korea are particularly tough, and drug crimes are typically punishable by at least six months to up to 14 years in prison.
Lee had claimed during early interrogations that he was tricked into taking drugs by a waitress in a bar, who then tried to blackmail him, Yonhap reported.
Popular for his best role as the rich father in 2019 comedy thriller Parasite, Park Dong-ik, Lee Sun-Kyun and his castmates won a Screen Actors Guild Award for their efforts in the film.
And at the 2020 Oscars, Lee won the Best Picture and four Academy awards.
He is also known for his leading roles in two South Korean movies, 2014’s All About My Wife and the 2012 thriller Helpless.
Parasite received an International Emmy Award nomination after starring as the lead actor in Apple TV+ 2021 series Dr Brain – the first Korean-language original series on the streaming platform.
