Vatican City, EPICSTORIAN – Pope Francis is set to return to the Vatican on Sunday after spending five weeks at Gemelli Hospital in Rome, where doctors fought to stabilize his condition.

The 88-year-old pontiff was admitted on 14 February with a severe respiratory infection that escalated into double pneumonia.

Dr. Sergio Alfieri, the lead physician overseeing his care, described the situation as “life-threatening”, stating that Francis endured “very critical episodes” during his hospitalization.

Medical teams worked intensively to manage the infection, ensuring his breathing remained stable despite significant strain on his lungs.

Recovery Plan and Rest Period

Doctors have emphasized that full recovery will take time. Dr. Alfieri confirmed that Francis’ condition is stable, though ongoing medication and at least two months of rest are necessary.

Breathing muscles suffered considerable strain, making it essential for the Pope to limit physical exertion in the coming weeks.

A senior cardinal noted concerns about his ability to speak clearly after relying on oxygen therapy for an extended period. Dr. Alfieri explained that lung damage temporarily affected his voice but reassured that normal speech would gradually return.

Public Appearance Before Discharge

Before departing the hospital, Francis intends to address the faithful from his 10th-floor hospital window on Sunday, offering a blessing.

A photograph released by the Vatican last week showed him celebrating Mass in a hospital chapel, providing reassurance to the global Catholic community.

Plans for future engagements remain uncertain. The Pope’s scheduled meeting with the King and Queen of England on 8 April has yet to be confirmed, as doctors strongly advise against activities requiring extended exertion.

His hospitalization marks the most prolonged period away from public duties since assuming the papacy in 2013. While returning to his residence at Casa Santa Marta, his participation in upcoming events will depend on his recovery progress.
