Minister Umahi Inspects South-South Projects, Sets Firm Deadlines for Contractors

(EPICSTORIAN) – In his continued commitment to monitoring infrastructure development, the Minister of Works, Engr. Nweze David Umahi, CON, FNSE, FNATE, carried out an inspection of ongoing projects in the South-South geopolitical zone on Wednesday, January 8, 2025.

The Minister’s visit focused on the dualization of the East-West Road, Section II-II (Ahoada-Kaiama), and the construction of multiple box culverts at flood-prone areas within the same section in Rivers and Bayelsa States.

Umahi Approved the Contractor’s  Quality of Work

Umahi, however, during the inspection expressed satisfaction with the quality of work being carried out by Messrs Setraco (Nig.) Ltd. on Section II-II of the East-West Road, according to FMINO.

“The quality of work here is commendable,” he remarked. However, the Minister directed the contractor to expedite progress by allocating additional resources to ensure the project meets its April 2025 delivery date.

Emphasizing the importance of durable infrastructure, Umahi instructed the contractor to implement continuously reinforced concrete pavement (CRCP) for a 2.3-kilometer stretch in flood-affected areas. This adjustment, he noted, would ensure the longevity of the road.

Contractor Pledges Compliance

Engr. Isaa Michel, the Project Manager for Setraco, expressed gratitude for the Minister’s visit and acknowledged the observations. “We appreciate your commendation and constructive feedback. We will intensify efforts to meet the April deadline,” he assured.

Rock Result Under Scrutiny

The Minister’s second stop was at the site of multiple box culverts being constructed by Messrs Rock Result (Nig.) Ltd. While acknowledging the quality of work, Umahi was visibly dissatisfied with the slow pace of progress.

He pointed out that the contract, initially scheduled for completion in November 2024, had been extended to December but remains unfinished.

“I am disappointed. This project should have been completed by now. You have until the end of January 2025 to deliver. Failure to do so will result in the revocation of the contract,” he warned sternly.

A Call for Accountability

Engr. Umahi underscored the federal government’s commitment to prioritizing infrastructure development under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Infrastructure Revolution.

“Roads and bridges are critical to the development agenda of this administration. Contractors must step up or be left behind,” he declared, stressing that no compromises would be tolerated in the delivery of critical infrastructure.

The Minister’s hands-on approach signals the government’s dedication to ensuring that public funds are used efficiently and that projects are delivered on schedule.

Community and Stakeholder Reactions

Residents and stakeholders in the South-South zone have lauded the Minister’s proactive stance, emphasizing the importance of timely completion of these projects.

“We have suffered enough due to the state of these roads. It’s encouraging to see the government holding contractors accountable,” said a community leader in Ahoada.

The Road Ahead

As the April 2025 deadline looms, all eyes are on the contractors to meet their obligations. The Minister’s firm resolve serves as a reminder that the era of lax accountability is likely over.
