(EPICSTORIAN) – Police have arrested multiple suspects in connection with the death of a woman found inside a  “suicide pod” in Switzerland.

The woman, whose identity has not yet been released, according to the BBC, was found dead after the suicide pod,  a device designed to assist in self-initiated euthanasia, was located at a forest hut in the Merishausen area by the police on Monday.

Swiss Suicide Pod Death Leads to Multiple Arrests, Raises Ethical Concerns

Police said they responded after receiving a report from a ‘law firm about a suicide that had occurred in the device’.

The deceased is believed to be the first case of this kind following an anticipation by a pro-assisted group in July, which favours the adoption of Sarco Pod, that the device’s first time of use would be this year 2024.

Supporters of the controversial “suicide pod” argue that it offers a non-medical alternative for individuals seeking euthanasia, as it eliminates the need for doctors or medications.

They point out that the portable device can be 3D-printed and assembled at home, making it more accessible to those who wish to take control of their own death.

However, the device has also faced significant opposition, even in Switzerland, where some of the world’s most progressive laws on assisted dying exist.

Critics are concerned that its easy accessibility, modern design could give room for more suicide cases and worry about the lack of medical oversight involved in its use.

While assisted dying remains illegal in the UK and the majority of European nations, Switzerland has become a destination for thousands seeking to end their lives under regulated circumstances.

Additionally, others are of the opinion that devices like the “suicide pod” could undermine the safeguards established by laws, raising ethical questions about their broader impact on society.

With this being unpopular in many other western religions, the legality of the device, nonetheless, remains murky in many jurisdictions.

Further updates are expected in the coming days.
