
Undersea Cable Cut: MTN GSM Service Provider Restores 100% Network Connectivity Across Africa
MTN Nigeria— (Epicstorian News)— Bayobab Group, previously Known as MTNconnect, said it has restored its global network service operations, following an undersea Cable cut that resulted in loss of functional network connectivity across Nigeria, Ghana other African countries.
MTN recovered over three terabits per second (Tbps) of capacity across Africa and beyond to bolster network connectivity and improve its service users’ experience.
On 19 March, 2024, the MTN group issued a statement on its network connectivity restoration, where it noted that “Bayobab’s ecosystem” enables seamless “global traffic” and adequately serves “third-party Mobile Network” operators.
It stressed the challenges faced by MTN Network users due to the undersea cable cut, and assured that it has inexhaustibly to “maintain a resilient network and efficiently reroute traffic”.
“Bayobab’s ecosystem facilitates secure and scalable global traffic within Africa and the rest of the world, serving 19 MTN markets, third-party Mobile Network Operators, Technology corporations and other Telecoms Service Providers,” the statement read.
“Although the recent subsea cable disruptions on 14 March 2024 presented challenges, we have demonstrated our capabilities to maintain a resilient network and efficiently reroute traffic.
“Throughout this challenging period, we prioritised the restoration of services by swiftly activating new cables to increase inter-connectivity and establish alternative routes, thereby bolstering our network resilience.”
The group acknowledged its responsibility to “prioritise” its users’ “network reliability and dedication” to serving Africa.
“This approach solidifies our commitment to prioritising network reliability and our dedication to connecting Africa and our customers as quickly as possible marking the final stretch toward connecting all our valued customers,” the statement also read.

Following the network connectivity disruption, Senior Manager, External Relations, MTN Nigeria, Mr. Funso Aina enlightened users, saying, “Our customers have been experiencing challenges connecting to the network due to a major service outage caused by multiple fibre cuts, affecting voice and data services.
“Our engineers are working hard to resolve the services gradually being restored in some areas. We ask for your patience and understanding as the team works to restore full service as soon as possible.”
“And We apologise for the challenges you may be experiencing with internet speed and accessing data services at the moment.
“This is as a result of damage to international undersea cables across East and West Africa,”
“The repair process is ongoing to resolve the situation as soon as possible. Please look out for further updates,” he added.
However, before the announcement of the service restoration, the telecom network connectivity disruption impacted negatively on various digital-based businesses and their activities
Thess businesses include those offering digital payment systems services, web servers connections, banks conducting inter and intrabank transactions, mobile network operators MNOs) running on minimal data capacity in Nigeria, Ghana and others.
