Xi Jinping and Grenadian PM Mitchell Forge New Vision for Long-Term Bilateral Growth
Beijing, (EPICSTORIAN) – Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for a strategic and visionary approach to advancing China-Grenada relations, emphasizing high-level cooperation and mutual development.
Xi’s remarks came during a diplomatic meeting with Grenadian Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell, marking the Caribbean leader’s first official visit to China this year, DailyChina said.
During discussions at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, Xi reaffirmed China’s commitment to collaborating with Grenada to align development strategies and maximize the potential of their bilateral relationship.
“China is prepared to foster stronger ties with Grenada, unlocking opportunities in areas such as trade, green energy, and digital innovation to benefit our nations,” Xi said.
Prime Minister Mitchell, in response, praised China’s role as a global leader advocating for the equality of nations and respect for sovereignty. He noted Grenada’s firm adherence to the one-China policy, emphasizing the importance of China’s territorial integrity.
Grenada Has Long-Standing History of Cooperation with China
Since resuming diplomatic ties in 2005, China and Grenada have forged a robust partnership. Notably, their relationship was solidified further in 2018 with the signing of a memorandum of understanding under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). Bilateral trade reached over $24 million in 2023, reflecting a 13.1% year-on-year growth, according to Chinese Customs.
President Xi highlighted that China’s expanding global influence offers new development opportunities for Grenada. “Within the South-South cooperation framework, China will continue to assist Grenada in enhancing socioeconomic resilience, addressing climate challenges, and fostering innovation,” he added.
Expanding Collaboration Across Sectors
The dialogue also focused on the potential for cultural, educational, and tourism exchanges to strengthen people-to-people ties. Xi urged both nations to intensify efforts in addressing climate change, disaster mitigation, and low-carbon development.
Mitchell echoed these sentiments, lauding China’s swift and effective response to the recent earthquake in Dingri County, Xizang. “Grenada extends heartfelt condolences to the people of China for their resilience during this natural disaster,” Mitchell said.
High-Level Engagements Boost Bilateral Momentum
During his seven-day visit, Mitchell is set to tour Zhejiang Province and Shanghai, further exploring avenues for bilateral cooperation. Premier Li Qiang, who hosted Mitchell at a formal welcoming ceremony, reinforced China’s readiness to expand mutually beneficial partnerships across multiple domains.
“The partnership between China and Grenada has laid a strong foundation, and together, we will elevate our cooperation to new heights,” Li stated.
The meeting concluded with the signing of multiple agreements focused on green development, trade, and further integration into the BRI framework.
The burgeoning ties between China and Grenada is evident of Beijing’s growing influence in the Caribbean, which has been a region vital to its geopolitical and economic strategies.
As the Caribbean country benefits from China’s economic expertise, this further cements the South-South cooperation model as a global development paradigm.
